Updated July 10th 2024 during a warm summer night on Funen.
Moved in to a smallholding in the Funen countryside. Getting to know the place and taking things slow. Our second batch of chickens recently hatched and we constructed for them a small A-frame coop with the intent of making it moveable. Utilizing our ATV we can move it across the pasture to maintain good health for both hens and pasture. Gardening has also taken up a lot of our focus. The land had a lot of perennials waiting for us and it was a game of patience to wait and see what would show up came spring. We have focused on our Zone 1 kitchen garden as we quickly noticed that we over-stretched while trying to tend a second (strawberry and onion) field as well. I attempted to grow eight varieties of tobacco but most died during seedling phase (except somewhat local Åhus Tobacco which survived a good while longer until the slugs finally got to them). Pasture maintenance has taken up more time than I expected so I have invested in some equipment to reduce that time sink.
Expecting our forth child come October. Our children seem to be flourishing in our new place and they education going well. As I write this my eldest is at a summer camp with the local Scout organization hopefully having a fantastic time. Time moves quick, I wish to cheerish these moments forever.
Working at a stealth startup as a Senior Software Engineer. I can not say much more than I greatly enjoy working at a start-up again. Primarily using Go the last two years has left me very impressed by the small and clean language. Made some attempts at optimizing my desk setup as I do spend quite some time here, primarily been focused on minimzing clutter, ergoncomics and lighting. Still is still an ongoing (perhaps never ending) process. Considering building my own display stand out of hardwood.
Currently finishing up the first book about the Dying Earth by Jack Vance, will probably pick up some more light Sword and Planet styled novel next.
Becoming a house owner has forced us to learn many new skills this spring, such as wiring fiber and ethernet through the walls, general building maintenance, gardening and animal husbandry. If I haven't improved my carpentry skills by much I have at least improved my confidence.
A few gems I have enjoyed using this spring are VIM and Newsboat (terminal based RSS reader). VIM being an old favorite but this spring I have made concious efforts to hone my skills further.
Since we moved away from our little lake that had such wonderful pike and bass fishing we have not found much time for fishing this year. It is our intent to change that and familiarize ourselves with fishing from the coast instead. On the husbandry side we have greatly expanded our chicken flock and are now self-sufficient in eggs. In a few months we hope to process our first meat birds as well. Sheep and ducks are on our short list of things we wish to add sooner rather than later.
Now it is time for some well earned rest. Good night friends.
